The Internet provides many critical components for managing and promoting a tourism organization.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the information technology needs of outdoor recreation and tourism organizations. The course will focus on the Internet as a tool that influence outdoor recreation and tourism businesses in their marketing, promotion and communications with customers. Emphasis is placed on providing a thorough understanding of how on-line information distribution is key to an organizations success.  Students will develop a tourism-related website.

LEARNING OUTCOMES AND INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

By the completion of the course, each student should be able to:

  • Implement web-based plan for a tourism and outdoor leadership (TOL) organization
  • Develop a website for an TOL organization

Specific instructional objectives are for students to be able to

  • Research information on the Internet
  • Describe the impact of the Internet on the TOL sector
  • Describe Internet topology (e.g., host, ISP, website, store, bank, user)
  • Explain the various types of websites
  • Describe the process and implement a commercial website
  • Describe skills necessary for building a website
  • Describe and use web promotional concepts (e.g., Pay per click, SEO, social media
  • Know basic constructs to a website, e-newsletter, blog
  • Take advantage of changing trends in tourism information technology
